Refractive surgery is a procedure aimed at correcting vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It reshapes the cornea to improve how light is focused on the retina, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. Common types include LASIK, PRK, and SMILE.
LASIK involves using a laser to reshape the cornea, the eye’s transparent front layer. First, a flap is created on the cornea using either a microkeratome (a mechanized blade) or a femtosecond laser (bladeless). The laser then reshapes the cornea under the flap to correct your vision, and the flap is carefully repositioned. This quick, painless procedure offers rapid visual recovery.
SMILE is a bladeless and flapless laser vision correction technique, eliminating the risk of flap-related complications. A laser creates a small lenticule of corneal tissue within the middle layer of the cornea, which is then removed through a tiny laser incision. This minimally invasive approach provides precise correction with less disruption to the eye’s structure.
Phakic IOLs are ultra-thin lenses implanted in front of the eye’s natural lens to correct high refractive errors. These lenses are ideal for patients whose corneas are too thin, abnormally shaped, or for whom LASIK may not be safe due to extremely high power. Phakic IOLs provide an effective alternative for achieving clear, sharp vision.
