Cataracts are a common eye condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or impaired vision. Over time, cataracts can significantly affect daily activities, but they are treatable with a simple surgical procedure that restores clear vision. Regular eye exams can help detect cataracts early, ensuring timely intervention.

What is a Cataract?

Cataracts develop gradually, leading to symptoms like blurred vision, difficulty seeing at night, and sensitivity to light. While aging is the primary cause, cataracts can also result from factors like eye injuries, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. Early detection through regular eye exams is crucial for effective treatment.

Symptoms of Cataract

Cataracts can cause blurry vision, making it difficult to see clearly, especially in low light. You might notice increased glare, particularly from headlights while driving at night. Double vision in one eye, frequent changes in prescription glasses, and unexpected improvement in near vision are also common symptoms.

Cataract Surgery

The cloudy lens is replaced with a foldable, artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision. The Phacoemulsification technique uses a tiny incision and topical anesthesia, avoiding injections or stitches. This quick, painless procedure offers fast recovery, allowing patients to return to their daily activities within a week.

Understanding the different types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is crucial for selecting the best option to meet individual vision needs and lifestyle preferences. Each type offers unique benefits, such as enhanced distance or near vision, and choosing the right IOL can significantly impact the quality of post-surgery vision and overall satisfaction.

Monofocal Implants

Monofocal implants are the most common type of intraocular lenses, designed to provide a single point of focus, typically for distance vision. While these implants significantly improve vision for seeing objects at a distance, patients often require additional glasses for close-up tasks, such as reading or using a smartphone.

Multifocal Implants

Multifocal implants feature multiple focal points, usually two or three, allowing for improved vision at various distances, including near and far. This reduces the dependency on glasses for most activities. However, they can be more costly and may cause visual disturbances like halos around lights, especially at night.

Toric Implants

Toric implants are specifically designed to correct pre-existing astigmatism during cataract surgery. These lenses address the eye’s irregular shape, similar to a baseball, by providing precise correction with a toric IOL. This tailored approach helps in achieving clearer vision without the need for additional astigmatism correction.

Frequently asked questions

Lets address common questions and concerns, providing clear answers to help patients make informed decisions.

  • When should the cataract be operated?
  • Can I wait a few months to get it done?
  • Is there any treatment to halt its progress?
  • Can eyedrops dissolve the cataract?
  • What is the best season to undergo cataract surgery?
  • What are the risks of the procedure?
When should the cataract be operated?

The ideal time to get cataract surgery done is when the patient is symptomatic and aware of the cataract in his day to day activities.

Can I wait a few months to get it done?

It is an elective procedure, not an emergency unless it is fully mature and swollen.

Is there any treatment to halt its progress?

Unfortunately, not. It is a natural ageing process and there is no treatment of proven benefit to halt its progress.

Can eyedrops dissolve the cataract?

No. Eyedrop surgery means numbing or anaesthetic eyedrops are used instead of an injection. However, a surgery needs to be performed to remove the cataract out of the eye and implant an IOL.

What is the best season to undergo cataract surgery?

The season or month does not matter. The results and outcomes are comparable at anytime of the year.

What are the risks of the procedure?

Like with every surgery, the risk of infection or something going wrong during the procedure, exists. Make sure to read the pre-operative consent in detail and get it clarified with your doctor.
